Gran Canaria is one of the Canary Islands, located on the Atlantic Ocean. Their location and the near-constant effect of the Trade Winds, give them a privileged climate, with pleasantly moderate temperatures.
Because of the variety of landscapes, Gran Canaria has been described as a "miniature continent". Spectacular cliffs embellish the northern coasts, while the midlands are filled with villages with great agricultural tradition. Its "summit" goes up to 1949 metres (6394 feet) between pine forests and impressive rocks.
The southern part of the island is where most tourist resorts and attractions are located: beaches with fine sand and a warm, sunny climate. The Maspalomas dunes, together with Playa del Inglés, are perhaps the most famous image of Gran Canaria. Other natural attractions include the rugged landscapes of the inland areas, the native and exotic flora, some species of which are unique all over the world.
